To complicate matters, several years earlier I had been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I was forced to leave my job and was bedridden for 6 months. I used the time to read everything on the subject and I slowly reclaimed my life through healthy eating, exercise and meditation. I was still re-building my health when we moved to Michigan. Quickly I figured out that all these experiences were giving me the opportunity to re-invent myself from the inside out. As I continued getting stronger, I began re-shaping the rest of my life. I brought together my background in fashion and cosmetics with new credentials and experience in fitness and health. Fit Your Style® was born. Having a busy Summer? Here are some ways to squeeze in your workout and have plenty of time to enjoy the sunny season!

JUMP ROPE for 10 minutes = 30 minutes of running
CIRCUIT TRAINING for 15 minutes = 90 minutes of leisure swimming
Perform 60 second each of the following exercises: push ups, plank (in hold position), bicep curls, squats, lunges with arm raises.
KICKBOXING for 15 minutes = 60 minutes of leisure swimming
Kickboxing uses the entire body during the workout and pumps blood to all extremities.
INTERVAL TRAINING for 15 minutes = 48 hours of fat burning
High bursts of training combined with low intensity fatigues muscles to the point they need to revoke and repair
MIND AND SPIRIT:
Earthing is a ”barefoot technique” to curb stress! It is a sunny day and you are enjoying the sun, you slide your polished pedicure toes into the lush green grass and say “ahhhhh.”
Instinctively, this is good for you, lifting your spirits in a therapy called Earthing. This therapy improves health& well being. It is based on the theory of the earth’s connection to our bodies “circadian ” rhythm.

Find Your Goddess Greatness This Summer Summer is a season for renewal, a time to wipe the slate clean and begin anew. Here are some tips to kick start your inner goddess! Detox your closet. Get rid of anything that doesn’t fit right, is worn or no longer serves a purpose in your wardrobe. Switch your moisturizer to a lighter version. You no longer need a heavier moisturizer. Look for one that has a SPF built into it or make sure you add a SPF to your morning routine. SPF 15 is the minimum or SPF 30 if you will be working outdoors. Do not ignore your throat, chest, back of hands; the areas that are the first tell tale signs of aging. Do you have a new fitness activity you want to try? A new video, or a new type of training? Go for it! Time to shock the system! Buy new running shoes. Toss the winter sneakers. Go to a store that can fit you based on the activity(ies) you enjoy for the ultimate fit. Invest in a new Summer workout. Between the new shoes and the outfit you will feel excited to get that body moving! Go for a professional steam facial to clear out the pores. Those of you who are avid readers, know I believe in Solutions vs. Resolutions. We have offered our solutions programs for several years now! What is the difference you ask?
Solution is an answer to a challenge.
Resolution is a declaration of a statement.
Although it is GREAT to send out your message i.e., “I AM going to lose weight”, it is important to do more than that to get the job done!
The NY times has reported most resolutions cease by the end January. Why? Because resolutions create way too much pressure and we cave in. I see so many women come through my studio or at events that have the interest to change but they stop there.
Let us look at the word interest – A sense of concern of curiosity about something.
YOU NEED MORE THAN INTEREST for RESOLUTIONS TO SUCCEED!!
So, I ask you. Where are you on the lifestyle change scale?:
#1 INTEREST (great to declare )
#2 ACTION** This is key. Action is to get something DONE. Movement. This speaks volumes in reaching your goals! Little actions pay way for huge success!
#3 DRIVE is pivotal to one’s success! Drive is the EFFORT to achieve something. Freely causing action to occur. *** Now ask, do you have enough internal drive to get you to your goal or do you need external drive i.e., a coach to guide you?? Be honest with yourself.
Look at each step as a goal.
Interest: I want to lose 20 pounds
Action: My goal is to lose 2 pounds a week by walking, choosing healthier foods and resistance training.
Drive: I know I need a coach (external drive) to hold me accountable.
Now, which program suits your needs?:

Exercise Can Make Menopause A More Pleasant Experience
Why Exercise?
Exercise stimulates the mood elevating hormones, which can reduce depression and anxiety. Aerobic exercise combats the dreaded “belly bulge” which is where most women gain during this “change” of life.
Strength training offers huge benefits for it stimulates the bones to retain the minerals that keep them strong and dense, which keeps osteoporosis at bay. Exercise can also reduce the risk of heart disease and aid in the lowering of cholesterol.
You do NOT need to become a body builder to obtain results! In fact, there is a special program called the “BEST” (Bone Estrogen Strength Training) exercise program for Osteoporosis Prevention, completed at the University of Arizona, which was created to provide guidelines for exercise that will improve bone health. The study was completed at the University of Arizona between 1995 and 2001. 226 women completed the study, 55.6 of average age, non smoking women. Half were taking hormone replacement and the others were not. All took Citracal® calcium. The study showed significant improved bone density after following the program for one year.
The BEST exercise workout includes:
-Cardio Warm Up (3 to 5 minutes)
-Strength Training Exercise (20 minutes)
THE BEST exercises are: Wall squat, one arm military press, leg press, lat pull down,
seated row and back extension
-Cardio Weight Bearing Activity (15 minutes)
Walking, stepping, weighted walking, walk and jog interval
-Small Muscle Exercise (5 minutes)
Select theraband, physioball or abs exercises.
-Cool Down/Stretching (2 to 5 minutes)
The program should be followed 3 times per week. Each exercise should be performed with having 2 sets, 6-8 repetition maximum on your moderate training day. On your 1 “heavy” day, you should have only 6 repetitions (not 8). Meaning, you can not lift any more after your 8th rep.
A healthy food plan should be considered as well: low fat, high fiber and high calcium intake will aid the full benefits of exercise.
Already an Exerciser – Great!
Consistent exercise during the years prior to menopause has an advantage! Bones will be healthy from strength training and breast cancer is reduced from the aerobic activity.
For optimum health, consistent exercise is required. Aerobic activity, strength training and flexibility need to become a part of your lifestyle.
Menopause and Beyond
Exercise helps reduce and prevent the following symptoms: Hot flashes, joint pain, anxiety, depression, sleep issues. It can reduce Heart Disease, Osteoporosis, and weight gain. Finally it can improve your strength, energy, flexibility, condition of your heart and organs!
It is all in the breath!
Do you want to slash your hot flashes in half? Just breathe!
Find a comfortable place and wear loose clothing. For ambiance, light a soy candle and put on some soothing music. Inhale slowly though the nose for a count of 5 and exhale through your mouth for 12 seconds. Focus on the air going in and out. Breathe from the belly, it expands as you breathe in, and contracts as you breathe out. Your mind can wander. Just return to the pattern of your breathing and focus. Repeat this before you get out of bed and have it be the last thing you do at night! Also, it can help during a hot flash!

Toning Shoes – Do They Really Work?

Finally ACE, American Council on Exercise, a non-profit organization called the “work-out watchdog”, hosts a study to find out! I have written on this subject before, and yes, I own:
Springboost shoes, Sketcher Shape-ups, Fit Flops and Sketchers Tone-Ups. Why? Like most women, I figured it all helps in the long run! Now, I NEVER purchased thinking they would replace exercise – if you think that, I have a bridge to sell you. When I was away for the month of July EVERY store I went into were selling these shoes off the racks – I saw TONS of these sold across the USA!
ACE enlisted a team of exercise scientists from the Exercise and Health Program at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, to study each of the shoes.
Here are the claims from the manufacturers, taken from the ACE article:

“Helping solve knee and back problems, relieve tension in the neck, ease joint pains-and more or less in passing help to tone and shape firm buttocks and thighs. And burning more calories when standing and slow running compared to ordinary shoes.”

“Four clinical studies in the U.S. and Japan show that Shape-ups increase muscle activity and energy consumption over standard fitness shoes!”

“It’s the shoe proven to work your hamstrings and calves up to 11 percent harder. And tones your butt up to 28 percent more than regular sneakers just by walking.”
All the shoes have an unstable sole design, in which the purchaser must find her balance in wearing the shoes, which would make the wearer “believe” the claims above. The shoes do take some getting use to wearing!
However, according to ACE, All of the claims above are NOT peer reviewed. For this reason, ACE’s Chief Science Officer Cedric Bryant Ph.D., urges consumers to beware.
A quick summation
ACE: The Results across the board, none of the toning shoes showed statistically significant increases in either exercise response or muscle activation during any of the treadmill trials. There is simply no evidence to support the claims that these shoes will help wearers exercise more intensely, burn more calories or improve muscle strength and tone
Go out and pick a pair of “regular” running, walking or training shoes that fit well and make you happy! Save your money!

Bunking the Myth About Cleanses

Every magazine you open, talks about the ‘celebrity” secrets to a “perfect body. Many of these strategies are unsafe and unsound.My goal is to provide you with education and awareness on making the right and healthy choice should you choose to cleanse or detox.
Healthy Cleanse /Healthy Detox
One should never go below 900 – 1200 calories (reality)
The cleanse should be Nutrient dense, not unsafe low calories.
Duration: 3 to 5 days (tolerable)
Light to moderate exercise to maintain muscle mass.
The Master Cleanse – 0 to very few calories,
ZERO Nutrients *** dangerous to your health!
Your body needs cellular nutrition to feed and repair itself.
7 to 30 days: Pure torture and only temporary weight loss.
Not exercise if you are not having any nutrients – you will begin to lose muscle mass.
MUSCLE burns FAT!
There are healthy options for you to effectively and safely provide cellular nutrition, improve insulin resistance and mental clarity. The byproduct of this healthy choice is weight loss as well.

The bestway to assess how many calories per day you eat is by keeping track. By being HONEST with your self, writing it down will Allow you be become aware of the foods you are eating, craving and how often. It can even detect the emotional cycle you may have with certain foods.
Something to think about…
Only 22% of adults engage in regular, sustained physical activity for at least 30 minutes five times a week, and only 15 percent exercise both regularly and vigorously.
No matter how poor your current level of fitness, you CAN start an exercise routine to become fitter and healthier!
90 plus year old women (my grandmother) who have used walkers have shown the benefits from light strength training.
Fad Diets/Low Diets:
I will discourage you to follow any low calorie (less than 800 calories) Diets as they can be dangerous and impede weight loss!
It is IMPOSSIBLE to lose 10 pounds in ten days! What is lost is water, important muscle tissue, with only a small percentage of the weight loss coming from fat. Fad diets also do not touch on the BEHAVIORS and EMOTIONAL ties associated with eating and never help establish better eating habits.
FASTING:
This is not recommended for the body can go into ketosis (a condition characterized by an abnormally elevated level of ketones in the body fluids and tissues) and encourages the loss of minerals and lean body tissue. Water and muscles are lost very quickly and the “weight loss” that goes with them may make the user feel encouraged to continue, which in reality, they are losing health and energy while the metabolism slows down.
So, when looking to “detox” choose a sound company, with high credentials, and one that is an advocate of cellular nutrition.

Spring Clean Your Health & Fitness Routine

Spring is here! Yippee! The sun feels so good! No more multi-layers of heavy fabrics! Tanks & short season – here we come!
Are you ready for spring body confidence? Here are some ways to build that esteem in your health & fitness routine!
1) Ditch the old running shoes! It is time for a new pair! Old shoes can aid to injury. Write the date of purchase on the show box and replace based on your mileage. When you walk or run 10 miles per week, replace your shoes every year. 15 miles, every 8 months, 20 miles, every 6 months, 30 miles, every 4 months.
2) Ditch the old cotton work out clothes and invest in some new anti-wick fabrics!
You will feel more “body beautiful” when you are not wearing old faded cotton that can trap sweat! Instead choose an energy color you love in a fabric that will leave you smelling sweet!
3) Invest in a good pedometer. A study form the British Journal of sport medicine show the cheap freebies you have received, do not keep an accurate reading. Spend around 20 25 dollars for a good one!
4) Get rid of the baby weights! MUSCLE BURNS FAT! Use heavier weights that challenge you. Your body can adapt quickly so if you do not increase, you will plateau. Lift as much as you can as long as it is not painful!
5) Drink your water! Ditch the sipping routine! Drink 4 to 6 ounces every 15 minutes of exercise! Sweating a portion of your body weight during a workout will weaken your workout by making you tired.
6) Ditch the idea “more is better” Consistency is key! You will not burn out and will be more apt to sticking to your routine!
7) Donate the clothes you have been hanging on too, that do not fit! Change someone else’s life by giving to a charity. Keep one piece as a “motivator’ and get moving that body!
